With posts set properly, treated pine commonly runs 15 or more years and cedar longer. Salt air and humidity are the limiting factors on the coast, and post depth matters more than the wood.
You don't have to. Sealing extends the life and holds the color; left alone, cedar weathers to grey. Either is fine.
